- October 2006 - Victorian Display
Harken back to the days of Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, and Robert Louis Stevenson with the library's new display. Displayed are antique pencils from the Victorian era along with books by and about Victorians. Thanks to Kari Kwiatkowski, Cataloging Librarian, for loaning the library her pencil collection and her hard work on the display.

- September 2006- Tavard Collection
Elaine J. Misko, Carlow University Librarian, is delighted to announce the donation of the Father George Tavard Collection to Grace Library. Consisting primarily of books written by Father Tavard, this collection examines a variety of theological issues. Father Tavard was once the chair of the Theology Department at Carlow. There is no doubt that this generous donation of books will serve to motivate and stimulate current and future faculty, staff and students of Carlow.
- September 2006 - New Psychology Database
The Library recently started a subscription to the Psychology & Behavioral Sciences Collection via EBSCOhost. This database will be of particular interest to those Carlow researchers needing articles dealing with psychology, psychiatry, anthropology, counseling, social work, and nursing. This database contains the full text of nearly 575 periodicals! Stop by Grace Library today for a demonstration or open a browser to the Periodical Indexes web page and then click on the link for EBSCOhost.

If you are in the library this summer why not borrow one or two of the gardening and botany books that are on display? These books can help to turn anyone's thumb green!
- June 2006 New Microfilm Reader/Printer
The library recently acquired a new Minolta Microfilm Reader/Printer.
Although many periodical subscriptions are now available online or come as a print subscription, there are a few that still arrive on microfilm. Also, this equipment is important for researchers who wish to review the library's vast collection of historical materials on microfilm.

- Carlow student Tara Dalton is presenting her senior art show in the main lobby of Grace Library. Tara's lovely ceramic pieces will be on display from April 27th through May 9th.
- April 10, 2006 Serving up some piping hot poetry
Come to Grace Library on Monday April 10th, 2006, 7 pm for FreshBaked Poetry, an audience participation poetry reading. This free event will take place on the third floor of the library. Audience shout outs and impromptu poem suggestions are more than welcome.
Also, the Freshbaked Poets are in hot pursuit of a few more performers to complete their bakers dozen. If you're an aspiring poet and would like to test your talents in front of a live audience, please contact Amy Sutton at 412-578-2048.

National Library Week 2006 marks the sixth year of The Campaign for America’s Libraries, a multi-year public education campaign sponsored by the American Library Association and libraries across the country to speak loudly and clearly about the value of libraries and librarians in the 21st century. More than 20,000 libraries in all 50 states are participating in The Campaign for America’s Libraries.
- April 2006 Celebrating the legacy of Patricia Dobler
Patricia Dobler, who passed away in 2004, was a long time member of the Carlow English faculty, a published poet and Director of Madwomen in the Attic. After her passing her family made the incredibly generous decision to donate over 500 of Pat's personal collection of poetry books to Carlow's library. These books now serve as inspiration to all future faculty, staff and student poets. In honor of Pat Dobler and National Poetry month the library will be displaying a selection of these titles during April.

- March 2006 AIDs Awareness
-Twenty five years after United States scientists first identified the HIV virus there is no cure or vaccine for AIDs or HIV.
- A United Nations report has estimated that the 2005 worldwide population of people infected with HIV, the virus that caused AIDS, is 40 million.
- The Centers for Disease Control report that African Americans represent an estimated 13% of the u.s. population, yet they are believed to represent half of new HIV infections.
Learn more about AIDs and HIV by borrowing one of the books on display in the library this month.
- February 2006 Happy Birthday!
Toni Morrison will mark her 75th birthday this February 18th.
To commemorate her special day , books by her and about her on display in the library this month. Morrison won the Nobel Prize for literature in 1993. She has been described as someone "who in novels characterized by visionary force and poetic import, gives life to an essential aspect of American reality." For those of you who have never read any of her wonderful novels, what are you waiting for?
- January 2006 And the Beat goes on....
Celebrate the 50th anniversary of the publication of Allen Ginsberg's epic beat poem Howl . Ginsberg may be one of the best known of the beat poets but there are so many more to enjoy. Their books are on display at the library this month. Check them out.

Did you know that the library offers access to over 9,000 journal titles? Find out which ones by using the new and improved Grace Library Periodicals Locator .
With added searching capabilities, this revised list will tell you what periodicals (journals and magazines) the library owns and how you can view the articles contained in each one. If you'd like more information about the Periodicals Locator or the periodicals collection ask a Librarian - we' re happy to help!
- January 2006 E-Reserves Trial
During the Spring 2006 semester Grace Library is expanding a trial of an electronic reserves (E-Reserves) service and offering online reserves for twelve Carlow classes. E-Reserves will (in accordance with copyright laws) offer computerized access to class reserve materials (journal articles, portions of books, etc.) through Carlow's Blackboard system.
Depending on the outcome of this trial this may become a service to the entire community in the future. If you have any questions about E-Reserves view the E-Reserves information page or contact Ted Bergfelt , 412-578-6139, Coordinator of Public Services.
- January 2006 Congratulations Kari!
Kari Kwiatkowski, the Technical Services Assistant at Grace Library since 1999, recently earned her graduate degree from the University of Pittsburgh. In January, Kari was promoted to Cataloging Librarian at Grace Library.
